Tips for gathering and using holiday greenery

Using fresh greenery for winter decorations is a tradition dating back hundreds of years. It is such a natural inclination to bring nature into the house when it too cold or messy to go outside, that this may even date back to cave dwelling times. Greenery such as holly, ivy, pine and cedar add a fresh look and natural scent to our homes.
  • To prolong the freshness of your holiday greenery, try these simple steps.
  • Take a bucket of tepid water with you when you go out to cut the greenery. Use clean, sharp cutters to take your clippings.
  • Immediately place cut ends of greenery in the water.
  • Ideally, you would then bring the greenery in to a cool place in the house and immerse it in water overnight. This allows the cuttings to absorb the maximum amount of moisture.
  • Woody-stemmed cuttings should be crushed on the ends to allow the cutting to take in more water.
  • The next day, recut the ends of the clippings and use in your arrangements.
  • There is now available a product called Wilt-Pruf which you can spray on the greenery to help it retain moisture.
